The 10×5 Project Revisited

You may remember that about this time last year, we did our first 10×5 project. I don’t know what it is about winter turning into spring that makes me want to get rid of everything we own… Surely I can’t be the only one, right? More and more lately, I’ve been feeling like we are just so buried by all the STUFF we own. And I really want our kids to embrace the ‘less is more’ way of living.

So, a few weeks ago, we decided to clear some clutter and 10×5 seemed like a good way to get the job done. Basically, a 10×5 project involves getting rid of 10 things per day (per person) for five days. We started with 5 empty buckets: one for each person in our family. And for five days in a row, we each chose (at least) ten things to put in our bucket.

I have to tell you, this time around, things went very smoothly! None of the kids freaked out about getting rid of stuff and I didn’t have to bug them about it either. Yay! It went so well, in fact, that I think we’ll do it again very soon.

I just started this today with my husband and my nearly-2-year-old son!  My husband likes to hold onto boxes of computer stuff/magazines/useless junk that he just can't part with, so whenever we move, we lug it all with us.  He reluctantly agreed to do this with me.  Day One, done :)  Thanks so much for sharing this!  Since it's a family activity, it doesn't seem so daunting!


Sandy took care of a lot of our decluttering, but I will say...when we finally return home, those things that we have lived without for the last several months, we can probably live without. Our house will be clutter free.

@Anne Isn't it amazing how you get attached to your stuff, then when you suddenly don't have it, you realize you never needed it in the first place?


LOVE this idea. I often feel suffocated by all the "stuff" we accumulate, but can't get a good system in place to clear it out. Will try this!
