We went apple picking last year. We had tons of fun. We decided to do it again this year. Things didn’t really turn out quite like last year. We had a crazy hot summer this year and apparently that knocked out quite a bit of the apple crop here. A lot of the orchards didn’t even have u-pick this year. Thanks to our friends the Medskers, we did find a place outside of St. Joe called Schweizer Orchard. It’s about an hour and a half drive from where we live.
We loaded up the kids and made a pit stop at the library to load up on reading material for the long drive. By the time we got there, the kids were pretty eager to pick some apples. We parked the car and trekked up the gravel road in search of some loot. We walked. And we walked. And we walked. It was hot and humid (who would have guessed it in late September?). The kids were grumpy. And whining. They were totally ready to leave. And we had a whopping TWO apples in the bag at this point. All the trees were bare. And when we did find a bunch on a tree, they were all rotting. Or covered in bees… that was fun!
We weren’t sure what to do, so we called our friends and asked where the heck all the apples were. After some guidance from them, and a lot more walking in the tall, sticky grass, we FINALLY found some apples! We snagged a bunch, filled our bags, and then headed down to the playground. The kids had a blast swinging and sliding and running through the hay bale maze.
After they were good and worn out, we loaded up in the car and headed home. The trip that was SO fun last year almost turned into a disaster. We don’t really like disasters, so we always try to push through to the good part. It usually works out in our favor. This time it did. If you ask the kids if they had fun apple picking, they’ll tell you they did. See, that’s the funny thing about kids… it doesn’t take a lot to please them. And if you end on a high note, often times, they’ll forget the bad parts. It’s like selective memories. So, here are some pictures from our epic apple picking adventure 😉
